As I've been making shapes, I've been using this as a reference for proportions. And you know, I knew the SL avatar was screwy (particularly the face), but I hadn't known just how screwy until I started carefully measuring things. Why on earth the arms were made so short is a total mystery.

I don't believe most people realize how long their arms are in relation to their overall body. Probably including the one who was responsible for how we start life as an AV. They may have used the female Ruth head for the males too.
Remembered from drawing class: add an extra head in length to give the appearance of a model.
I took a yard stick to my reflection in my full length mirror to get my own proportions right. My arms are maxed !! (they are fairly long in RL) and my hands are finally tweaked down to 33!
I've been on the lookout for shapes for a couple of men who aren't any good at customizing theirs. With no intention of offending anyone (I haven't check out everything available) many of the male shapes I've seen have one or more of the following problems (my perspective of course):
arms - too short
head - too small
hands - off one way or another
feet - too big or chiseled
