People who have been by are telling me that the lag is not bad at all, something I don't understand. I'm not complaining, but it strikes me as very bizarre, given the prim and polygon counts I have.

It might depend on how your mixing the landscaping with the prim position. to my understanding, when a prim is behind or positioned such that the Linden ground obscures it and does not tax the viewer's resources with rezzing or the like. I'd have to double-check with my source on where he got his information about that, so don't hold me to it. :P
I believe things behind the ground are occluded (as are things behind other prims). Still, there are a lot of polygons in any one view, even taking that into account, so the way other people don't have bad lag is weird.
